Something about that doesn't sound quite right. I thought it was early when my friends in the States had their 3 year olds in pre-school... but 2 years old is even crazier to me. However, that's standard operating procedure in Japan, it seems.
Most of the Japanese preschools go Monday thru Friday from 9-3. We've been looking at them for a couple of reasons. One, Wyatt really misses "school." The other day I asked him what he wanted to do today, and he said, "I want to go to school." Umm... okay. He has been missing his friends a lot lately. Whenever we go to the park he'll ask, "My friends gonna be there, mommy?" We have a playgroup on Tuesdays that we go to, but I guess that's not cutting it! I think he really misses the social interaction he got at daycare.
The second, more selfish reason is, as you know if you've been reading my posts, I'm a little worried about having time for the new baby so this would really help me out with that. We toured a lot of the Japanese Montessori schools, and while I loved the idea of him having that cultural experience, we ultimately decided on a preschool that is run by a Japanese church here - All Souls Episcopal Church - but that is managed by American staff. Mostly this is because I was more comfortable with the facility, the teachers, and the schedule. This preschool is only 3 days (MWF) as opposed to every day, and only goes from 9:30-1:30, which I think is more appropriate for a 2-year old. Also, they do incorporate Japanese culture lessons one day a week from a local national, as well as music and time for chapel. They do lessons on colors, numbers, letters, art, and holidays every day.
I was ecstatic when they called me this morning and said they had an opening in January because there is usually a wait list for this preschool that is quite long. I've gotten many great recommendations from friends and neighbors here about All Souls, so I'm really excited about this. When I told Wyatt, he was excited too! He will start "school" on January 4th for their second term, which runs through the end of May. This will also give me time to figure out what I want to do after that point when the baby comes - return to work, or stay home!
